In the vibrant hub of 1960s and 1970s Atlanta, Georgia, my grandmother stood as a beloved figure in the kitchens of the white, wealthy elite. Hired for her culinary prowess, she was much more than a cook; she was an artist whose canvas was her batter and her colors the local peaches, pecans, and rich creams available. Over the years, she infused traditional Southern recipes with her own innovative twists, her cakes becoming renowned amongst Atlanta's high society. Despite the restrictive racial and social norms of the time, she carved out a space of respect and influence through her exquisite desserts, each recipe a testament to her delicate balance of tradition and innovation.
As my grandmother's reputation grew, so too did her collection of unique cake recipes, which she began to pass down through the generations. First, to my mother, who grew up watching her mother create and innovate in the kitchen, learning not just the techniques but the love and stories baked into each cake. in turn, my mother carried these recipes forward, adding her own touches and adjustments, imbuing them with her era's spirit. Eventually, these recipes reached me, a treasured inheritance steeped in history and family love. You not only inherited a collection of recipes, but a legacy of resilience, creativity, and the power of connecting through food, a legacy you continue to cherish and share in every slice served. That is what we pass on to our customers.
